BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG…
Summer’s over kids. It’s finished. Gary Stewart has played his 206th festival of the season and the band have hung up their jogging shoes to move on to more sombre affairs. No more 500 miles. No more 30 minute renditions of 1970s disco classics. No more indoor hurdle events. We’re taking things seriously now. And hopefully now autumn is stretching its spindly hand towards us we can look forward to some milder and drier weather. Me, I’m moving to Spain. But there are good things to look forward to…I kid you not…it’s time for a new Hope and Social album. What the hell? A new album? Yep…the beauty of having our own studio and having very low standards is that we just bang out the tunes whenever our muse grabs our danglies and tells us to pen a reggae masterpiece.
Yep…we’re undertaking a stealth marketing campaign this time so we’ve only told our nearest and dearest what we’ve been up to. This is our 5th week in the Crypt and we’re 10 tunes into what promises to be a rather spiffing record. We armed ourselves with Ray Charles’ greatest hits, a second hand VHS copy of The Commitments and a tiny mug of funk and did what we do best…order Chinese food and laugh at the government.
So the album, (working title Gimli the Magic Bear…this might change) will be out on November 12th, the first date of our tour…
Yes it is. But we forgot to tell ourselves. Sadly we did tell our loved ones, so they have been left wanting. But…we’re coming out to play! Yep, we’re starting our prayer offerings to the van god, recruiting a new trumpet player (“I’m getting a trumpet player to cover me this time so I can concentrate on dancing” – James) and stocking up on rickets so we can take this fair country by storm. Be there or be at home all sad and vulnerable.

AND A CHRISTMAS DO? THIS IS GETTING OUT OF HAND
We’re going to end it all with the rather special “End-of-tour-Hope-and-Social-Christmas-office-party” at the beautiful Otley Courthouse. We can’t say too much about this (mainly because we still don’t know what we’re doing) but all you need to know is that we’ve ordered a wipe clean photocopier and a guest appearance by an alcoholic Santa. It’s going to be the big goodbye to a rather fantastic 2012 so please come down and help us celebrate.
SURELY THAT’S IT?
Yes. Well no actually. Many of you have asked what happened to Crypt Covers recently. Well basically we overfaced ourselves. Just like the Pizza Hut eat all you want buffet. We filled up on salad and forgot about stuffed crust. We’ve had to take a month or two off to concentrate on the album and crumbling friendships but we’ll be back on 31st October…and there’ll be 2 more before the end of the year. And someone tells me there might be a Crypt Covers Live coming your way soon…I couldn’t possibly comment but watch this space.
Yep that’s it. In the words of the great Gary Stewart, “Why are we doing this?”. In the words of the great Simon Wainwright, “Because we’ve only got three good years left in us and we need to get it out of our system”. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Til the next time.
