Another quick catch-up from The Crypt

I’m knackered so this will be very short indeed! Great day down the studio today…finally pressed that big red button and started recording this album. First track up is a sort of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young type affair originally titled Cotton Wool although it’ll probably end up being called Threads (although that does remind me of the terrifying 1980’s film about a nuclear strike on Sheffield which haunted me as a child). It’s a pretty straightforward one but it’s got some lush 3 part harmonies and by the end of the day seemed to have a solidity and intricacy which had previously been lacking. Finished the lyrics in the van on the way there this morning and they seemed to sit just right. A great relief.

James turned up at 3 just in time to add a bit of brass to Family Man – a Van Morrison-esque thing. The bones of it had been kicking round my guitar for ages but it’s starting to sound fantastic now – big, blustering, dare I say with groove! – Gary’s kit, Simon’s bass and my guitar finally gelling after 2 or 3 attempts to make the thing kick along. James added some really simple brass licks and ascending lines which added about 300% and Hux ditched his guitar and tried some piano. Messy so far but it had some proper energy. Back onto that tomorrow.

warriorgrrl came down for the day – shot some video, talked about old school editing, drank tea, discussed Moleskines. All good.

I’m sorry to say we’re all out of home-made cakes though.
