Crypt Covers 3: Sam Airey

6th June 2012: Here we go! Courtesy of the lovely and awesome The Blind Club here is the video from Crypt Covers III – Hope and Social and Sam Airey performing Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down” with a cheeky bit of Nina Simone in the middle…

Crypt Covers: Hope & Social and Sam Airey – ‘Won’t Back Down’ from The Blind Club on Vimeo.

Just so’s you know… The first half of the song was performed entirely live exactly as you see it filmed… There ain’t no cheating here!

31st May 2012
Crypt Covers LogoAlrighty then GREAT BRITAIN! It is with sunburnt necks and overflowing glass recycling boxes, we march jubilantly in last years Havaianas towards Crypt Covers III.

And boyo oh boyo is this going to be a corker; we are delighted to announce that lowering the average age (quite considerably) in The Crypt this coming Thursday (31st May) will be the uber talented welsh wonder Mr Sam Airey! Together we will attempt to arrange, record and produce a collaborative cover track, chosen by you, in just one day.

You can submit your lovingly chosen Crypt Cover suggestions NOW on twitter using the tag #cryptcovers, or pop them in the comments box at the bottom of this post. Please submit as many suggestions as you wish. One of them will take us somewhere fresh and exciting.

Videographantasticness

Our first two Crypt Covers videos have been filmed and editted beautifully by the ace Shot By Sodium, and while we’ll miss their presence this Thursday, we’re ecstatic to announce that this month, we will be joined by Matt and James of The Blind Club. They’re involved with all sorts of videography awesomeness, from working with The Enemy and The Vaccines to feature films in deepest darkest Eastern Europe, so be sure befriend them on twitter and the like Matt Maude / The Blind Club.

As per usual, we will be live blogging the days shenanigans from first thing in the morning, until late at night, using the clever “Cover It Live” window below. No Dom and Ben this time though (you will no doubt be pleased to hear [winks]), so please do come and get involved, so we don’t feel lonely and all that.

5 Things You Should Know About Sam Airey

1. Sam Airey sings indie-folk stories, some of which concern the seaside and/or death. Some of them concern neither. His latest EP ‘A Marker & A Map’ was released in March 2012.

2. Sam grew up near the coast on Anglesey, North Wales (Rich has fond schoolday reminiscences about Anglesey and a girl called Donna, and Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” – though that’s a story for another time), but has lived in Leeds for the past few years. He loves the city, but occasionally still misses the sea.

3. The past year or so has been a particularly exciting one for Sam. 2011 ended with Sam’s single ‘The Blackout‘ being named as BBC Radio Wales ‘Song of the Year’, beating names such as Los Campesinos! and Manic Street Preachers to the title. This year has already seen Sam make his debut national television appearance on Channel 4, achieve his first daytime Radio 1 plays, and play his largest headline shows to date.

4. He is quickly gaining both a loyal fanbase and an increasing amount of plaudits and radio support. People who have said nice things include Lauren Laverne, Tom Robinson, Johnny Marr, Bethan Elfyn, and Huw Stephens. Here is some footage of Sam and cellist Emma misbehaving during their visit to Maida Vale studios to record a session for Huw on Radio 1:

5. Sam is currently writing an album. In the meantime you can keep track of things via his website (www.samairey.com), Twitter (www.twitter.com/samairey) and FB (www.facebook.com.samaireymusic).

The Story So Far…

We are delighted with the first two Crypt Covers with Ellen and The Escapades and She Makes War, and the response to them has been tremendous. So no pressure then. The project has a really lovely feel, it’s gathering momentum, and we are all exited about where our collaborators and you take us next.

Getting in early this month so I don’t fall foul of the time zone dramas.

Shaun (our 4 year old) would love a cover of Marry You (Bruno Mars)

Otherwise…

You’ve lost that loving feeling
The boxer (or any S & G duet really)
Please don’t go (KC or ACDC)

No breakfast for Sam? Should I be worried? Do I need to send him a pack-up? Beautiful work guys.
