“Recipes, like music, are for sharing”

So we were sat thinking about our slightly unusual but completely charming Come Dine With Us evening.

It’s caused quite a stir don’t you know. (*warning, this is not the last food pun in this post)

And our interactive song and video Marching on Through.

And then we were inspired…

  • Inspired by a tweet from the worlds greatest living American Ellen, who wrote “Recipes, like music, are for sharing”.
  • Inspired by the success of our “Prayer Book” which you helped us create.
  • Inspired by the fact that this kind of thing is totally possible these days.

…and we decided we wanted to make a book.

A book About Music and Food

A sort of knife and tuning fork mashup, if you please.

No more being force fed by Jamie, FearnleyWhittingstall, Delia, or Dahl (what’s that all about?).

And if we make any money from it, lets give some of it to the Jamie Oliver Foundation, because kids need a chance.

Make Art

We want you to be part of it. We want you to create your own page for the book, to include three things;

  1. Your favourite recipe
  2. The music you like to listen to while cooking or eating it
  3. Your favourite food and/or music venue in your town

We will put the pages you create with the pages we create, and page by page we will build a beautiful book. Sound fun?

Anything Goes

You can design the page however you want, in any medium, make it beautiful or keep it simple, physical or digital. Anything goes. Just put your name and your town on it.

However you send it in, that’s how it will go in the book. All we ask is that you have fun with it. Maybe get your kids involved or help them make their own. Just enjoy the creation of something. Something unique. Something to keep.

Then post them to: Hope and Social c/o Alamo Music, Cavendish House St, Andrews Court, Burley Street, Leeds, LS3 1JY, United Kingdom

Or email them to hope@hopeandsocial.com

We don’t want to be any more prescriptive than that, get a recipe book out for inspiration, and let’s see where it goes.

Hints and Tips

To get you going, here are some reminders of things recipes sometimes have:

A recipe name, think ready steady cook. Some background, where is it from, why you like it, when it’s good to eat, with what drink. Some photos, of the dish, of the ingredients, of someone, of anything. And, most importantly, ingredients and cooking instructions.

When will this book be out?

We aren’t 100% sure when the book will be out, in what format, maybe with album 2, it may start as an e-book, or we may keep it rolling with some kind of food related tour…who knows where this will take us.

Lets do it. Why not? It will be fun, and we will make some art.

Can’t loose.

Sweet! Hmmm, what to submit? My “I can’t believe there’s flour in those” brownies? Chris’s favorite veggie quiche? Maybe I’ll be inspired by the “Possibly related posts,” and work out some sort of “King of Spain” paella. Can I submit more than one?

Maybe i’ve misunderstood, but if people send in pictures of their favourite CD, or song lyrics to represent the music they listen to you may be infringing Copyright if you publish a book which contains those pictures (same goes for is someone sends in a photo of a recipe book as part of their design).

Hi Ajax,
Yeah, I guess what we’re looking at is home-grown goodies. Hand-created versions of albums perhaps for example, though I reckon…
That said, the copyright on any photo is owned by the photographer, so it’s a not clear-cut.
We don’t want to cut and paste from existing products, we want to crowd source a new original book…
Soooo We want Your recipes, we want to know your influences and your design.
Does that help… or am I waffling?
